Who is Architect Rassel Catapang?

Rassel Catapang is a Filipino architect and content creator. He is currently best known for his loft-type tiny house design videos across social media platforms but gained prominence on YouTube for his loft bed design ideas for small rooms during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

Born and raised in Davao City, Philippines, Catapang was a consistent honor student from Kindergarten to High School and graduated as Class Salutatorian from Pablo Lorenzo National High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture at the University of Mindanao (UM) from 2006 to 2012. He was an academic scholar of the university and a member of its Student's Training Assistance Program (STAP) wherein he worked at the university's Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Laboratories as a Student Assistant (SA) or Working Student for a 100% tuition fee discount. Throughout his college years, he worked there in the morning from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and had his classes in the afternoon and evening. As a college student, he also worked as an Online Article Writer for Canadian company Online Advertising Services Corporation to earn money for his personal allowance and project expenses from 2010 to 2013. His parents and elder sister also financially supported his studies.

Catapang worked as an apprentice at EM Bacus Construction and Electrical Supply from January 2013 to April 2015. In order to gain experience in real estate, he decided to move to Uraya Land Development, Inc. and worked there as a draftsman from May 2015 to August 2018. Seven years after his graduation from college, he finally decided to take the Architect Licensure Exam (ALE) in January 2019. With an average score of 81.10%, he was 0.4 point away from the Top 10. After obtaining the license, he became a part of MAC Builders Davao in February 2019 and worked there as the Head of the Special Projects Section until February 2020. He went to Dubai in 2020 to seek greener pastures but unfortunately, a few weeks after his arrival there, the coronavirus started spreading across different countries. He was able to work in Dubai as an architect at DAT Engineering Consultancy for only a week. After his 5-month stay in Dubai, he decided to return to the Philippines. He was hired again by his former employer Uraya Land where he worked for only three months because he decided to become a freelance architect and focus on social media content creation.

Being a content creator opens several opportunities for him including  design projects in America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

As of October 2025, Catapang has 243K subscribers and 50 million views on YouTube, 200K followers on Facebook, and 104K followers and 1.6 million likes on TikTok. Many of his videos gained millions of views. The following is a list of links to his social media pages:

My Board Exam Journey

This stolen shot of me was taken by my mother minutes before my board exam on Day 2. Yeah, I never wasted time during my review even until the last minutes of it. I prepared for 10 months and reviewed for 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. I quit my job and deactivated all my social media accounts to completely focus on the review and give it my all. My world for 10 months revolved around the four corners of my bedroom. I was so committed to my goal of getting a spot in the Top 10. Honestly, my wildest goal was to get the 1st place.

I had that big goal because I wanted to make my family proud and happy especially my parents and bring honor and pride to my alma mater.

On the day of the release of the results, I was so excited to find out which place I actually got but life has really its own ways of surprising us. Unfortunately, I ended up drowning in my own tears when I did not see my name in the list of topnotchers, considering that I was so happy and satisfied with my performance because a lot of what I had studied came out in the exams. It did hurt me even more finding out subsequently that I was just a few points away from my goal.

Indeed, our plans for ourselves are not always what God has planned for us. My goal wasn't for me, someone else was destined for it. The most important lesson that I learned from this experience is that no matter how hard you work for something you badly want and need, if it's not meant for you, then it will never be yours. It also taught me how to just surrender everything to God and not expect things as expectations do hurt excruciatingly.

In spite of all these things, I'm still so proud of myself in that all my hard work paid off and now I'm an architect. My heart is still filled with so much joy and gratitude. I will not stop making my God and family proud.

My review and exam journey brought out the best in me, making me a much stronger and better person.

Being unable to achieve my goal did not negatively affect my faith in the Supreme Being. In fact, it made my faith even stronger. Everything happens for a reason. Whatever lies ahead of me, I know I'll always have God within me. Whatever He has in store for me, I will accept wholeheartedly. THERE'S ALWAYS A HIGHER PURPOSE. ☝

I Almost Made it to Top 10!

This is how close my rating is to the ratings of Top 7 to Top 10. I'm feeling so sorry for my family for being unable to achieve my goal. It hurts me. It's supposed to be my late Christmas gift to them. 😔
